The Walmart Corporation has signed a lease with developer Jeff Davis of Burlington to build Vermont’s first Walmart Supercenter on Route 5 in Derby. Sunlight broke through morning clouds Tuesday, as Davis welcomed Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin, almost the entire Orleans County delegation, the mayor and council members from Newport City and half the select board in Derby to the location of the proposed Walmart Supercenter. Alexandra Serra, public relations manager for Walmart in northern New England, said Walmart would create 300 new jobs in Derby when the 146,000-square-foot store opens, with construction expected to begin next year. “This is an example of how we create jobs in the Kingdom,” Shumlin said to applause.
